FRAVARDEGAN CEREMONIES

FRAVARDEGAN CEREMONIES PERFORMED ANNUALLY IN MARCH AT SANJAN

Everyone of us has the duty to have the annual "Muktad" or "Fravardegan" Ceremonies performed for our dear late family members and friends – especially for those who have no family members surviving them, who would arrange for these special prayer ceremonies to be performed for ten days annually.

According to the birth and death rate statistics published in "Parsiana", every year about 1200-1300 Zoroastrians die – many through old age between 70 and 100 years; and only about 300 are born. This puts a strain on the Agiary Panthakies who have to cope with the full first year after- death ceremonies of all the persons who have passed away during the previous year. It is increasingly difficult to cope with separate tables and "Behra" (Silver Vases) for every individual "Asho Farohar" with separate "Baaj", "Afringan", "Farrokshi", and "Satum" (once, twice or thrice daily) for the persons who have passed away several years ago.

Agiary Panthakies are also facing the problem of finding enough "part-time mobeds" – athornan family men who have undergone the Navar ceremony, and are working in jobs full time, - to cope with the "Muktad rush".

Everyone of us, as Zoroastrians, has to face this problem. In the "Fravardin Yasht" Ahura Mazda reveals to Asho Spitama Zarathushtra how the Holy Farohars come to the help of those who remember them and pray for them. Karda 1.1.

"Mraot Ahura Mazdaao Spitamaai Zarathushtraai, aeva te zaavare aojascha khareno avascha rafnascha framrava, erezvo Spitama, yat ashaonaam fravashinaam ughranaam sivi-thuranaam yatha me jasan avanghe yatha ne varen upastaanm ughtaao ashaonaam fravashayo"

Thus I declare to you O righteous Spitama, about the righteous, powerful and triumphant Fravashis – with their strength and power, glory and comfort, they came to my assistance, the powerful righteous Fravashis helped me! (as they also help each one of us who invoke their help by remembering them and praying for them)

At Zoroastrian College we are endeavoring to cope with this community crisis, and solve the problem, by tackling it in two ways. (1) To develop a good cadre of educated Zoroastrian Priests, we are providing the Athornan boys the possibility of being trained in the Zoroastrian College for the degrees of B.Phil, M.Phil, and Ph.D. In the long run, a new generation of better educated Priests will provide a Spiritual backbone for the survival of the Zoroastrians world-wide.

(2) At the Zoroastrian College building at Sanjan,(the historical landing place in India of the Zoroastrians who left Iran after the end of the Sassanian Dynasty, where the sacred Iranshah AtashBehram was consecrated by Mobedan Mobed Nereyosangh Dhaval) every year in March for 10 days before Navroze, the Fravardegan Ceremonies are being regularly performed. The Afringan, Farrokshi, and Satum – morning, afternoon and evening – are ceremonies which are jointly performed for all the Asho Farohars whose names are included in the long list of Yadgari Donations. The Baaj is individually performed for only certain names in the list.

ZOROASTRIAN COLLEGE can provide this benefit for helping our community members world-wide. If you wish to have the names of any of your dear departed family member or friend included in the list of names of the Asho Farohars, for whom the prayer ceremonies are performed annually in March, it is possible for you to do one of the following:

YOU MAY USE THE YADGARI DONATION FORM  and send it together with cash or bank Draft payable on any Bombay bank in favour of SHAH BEHRAM BAUG SOCIETY, to our Bombay College office address together with the names of the persons in whose Yadgari the donation is given. Please take care to state – BEHDIN/OSTA/OSTI/ERVAD, as is appropriate, before the name of the person, and father or husband of the departed person in whose Yadgari the donation is given. Eg. Osti Perin Ervad Nozer or Behdin Xerxes Behdin Dara ,etc.

If you prefer to give an annual donation amount instead of a lumpsum Yadgari One Time Donation, you may give standing instructions to your bank to send a Bank Draft in favour of SHAH BEHRAM BAUG SOCIETY to our College office address in Bombay; and send a xerox copy of your standing instructions to your bank, to us together with the names of the departed "Yadgari" family members or friends as indicated above for inclusion in the list of Asho Farohars for whom the Prayer Ceremonies are to be performed. The Bank Draft should reach our office before January end each year.

We hope this will be useful to you, and the work of the Zoroastrian College Avesta and Scriptural Studies Dept. will benefit our Zoroastrian Community members worldwide.

The best way to remember our dear departed family members is to set aside a clean corner of our home for ourselves to pray & perform the ceremonies. But in this busy 21st Century, many people do not find the time nor have the facility. Hence through Zoroastrian College this possibility is made available to all Zoroastrians world-wide.

Please contact our College Office at Bombay address for further details or e-mail at mazocolhc@yahoo.co.in or  mazocol@hotmail.com
